Entry 1 - Travel, Arrival and Day 1

Welcome to my blog! The current plan is to keep this regularly updated with my happenings here in Kenya, both on the job front and anything else that might happen that seems worth mentioning. Hopefully that plan stays in place.

I landed at about half midnight yesterday, having been delayed by an hour or so out of Heathrow by air traffic control issues, something to do with no fly zones over Libya. The 8 hour flight into Nairobi was made somewhat tedious as my screen was broken and there were no spare seats, but sleep and one and a half books helped pass the time. Due to the delay it was a bit frantic to get through immigration and then on to my connecting flight to Mombasa, but it turned out OK and the rest of the journey was pretty smooth. I was picked up at the airport by my aunt Penny and two cousins, Tadge (17 ) and Oli (12), along with a bundle of fluff that is the 2 month old puppy Papaya.

Today I had a bit of a lie in to get over the long day yesterday. We then went to a restaurant on a creek just outside of Mombasa with Oli and my uncle Julian so Oli could try out his freshly imported fishing rod and I could meet up with Rene, who I start work for tomorrow (first major task – the work permit). We had a fairly relaxed lunch and a fish (albeit an unsuccessful one) whilst we chatted and then came back home. Since then I’ve had a swim and am now writing this in anticipation of a relaxed evening, and hopefully a skype session with a few people back home.

I’ll try and update this again tomorrow after the first day at work. Rene said that initially this will mostly consist of learning the basics of his business so I can be useful!
