Pictures!:
This is the second, massive, tank for the fry but it runs on
the same principle as the first. It’s constructed from a tall thin tank that we
made for the purpose, within this is a big (~45cm diameter) slice of pipe. It
was a nightmare for the guys to cut the pipe square for the first smaller one
which we made, but they managed it a lot better this time round and had it sweet
as a button.
Unfortunately the tank collapse last week necessitated a fair bit of sanding
down, which meant that they had to do it again!
The idea behind the tanks is to create a circulation around
the inside of the pipe, preventing the fry from spending too much time at the
surface (a ‘pseudo kriesel’ circulation for those who are interested). This is
accomplished by the airline you can see coming in from the surface to the right
hand side of the pipe. The bubbles this creates pull the water up as they
ascend, powering the circular water movement. There’s quite a swift movement around
the edge, so the juveniles tend to concentrate in the middle, as you can see
here:
Unfortunately we’re still not getting any success on keeping
the juveniles alive, but I’ve found a supplier who is willing to mail us some
rotifer (small zooplankton that will hopefully be of a more suitable size than
the artemia) eggs. Here’s hoping that the eggs survive the posting and we can
make them work.
That’s all the interesting stuff from work this week really,
other than the staff party we had on Friday night at the local go-karting and
paintball place. Everyone had a whale of a time, although one of the gardeners
is now, rather worryingly, convinced he can drive on the roads having managed a
crash free lap in a go kart!
Outside of work I’ve managed a trip to the gym 6 times this
week, it’s amazing how good an incentive it is to have paid an obscene amount
for membership. On Wednesday night I went along to a volleyball on the beach
session at a local hotel, I can’t say much for my volleyballing skills but it’s
lovely to spend an evening on the beach with a cold beer in hand!
That’s the lot for this week guys, hope you’re still
enjoying it.
