I’m afraid it’ll be another fairly short one, partly because
not much has happened, and partly because I’m shattered!
Work was pretty uneventful. I was back down to Shimoni on Wednesday
to go out with the divers, luckily I got the nicer boat this time round. However,
I managed to fall asleep in the full glare of the midday sun and now have the
mother of all tan/sunburn lines on my arms, not exactly cool as a cucumber …
The phytoplankton continues to work pretty well, we’re now
up to 35 odd bottle. Hopefully this week we’ll have enough to start using it to
feed the fish house artemia. At some point in the next couple of weeks I’m expecting
a delivery from the States that should have some new culture starters, I’m
dubious about how well they’ll have survived the transit but if they’re healthy
when they get here we’ll have some cultures that I’ll have supervised from the
start and kept completely clean, a pre requisite for when we finally get
started on the seahorse stuff properly. In the same shipment there should also
be some rotifer eggs so I’ll be able to get that started as well, I’m looking
forward to that lot arriving!
There’s been a fair bit of confusion about the delivery of
lab kit. I was told it would arrive a couple of weeks ago but as of yet there’s
no sign of it, coupled with the container shipment issues it’s all getting a
bit frustrating at the moment. However, I finally managed to get through to the
manager of the lab supply company the other day, maybe he’ll be more successful
at chasing it up than I have. We’ve also been told that the container will
probably get to Mombasa in mid-April, which is definitely progress.
That’s been work this week, outside of that there’s been
birthday meals and volleyball on the beach, far too much sweat and aching in
the gym, more amateur dramatics, basketball hoop construction (a surprisingly
epic endeavour for a Sunday afternoon) and late night dancing – shorts, t-shirt
and flip flops at 4 in the morning will never feel normal.
Thanks for reading folks.
